As rarely as I agree with Jeff “There is so Free Lunch” Jarvis, he’s really on to the right thing here. I’m embarassed that it didn’t occur to me before. Where is the news-specific analytics system that allows us all to quantify the problem, understand who contributes to the ecology, and who quietly/secretly is a free rider. As an industry, we’re stumbling around in the dark without real data. No wonder we can’t find an answer.

The contributions to be counted include sharing by individuals. Sharing creates some value, and there’s no reason not to create discounts in return for it if they can be priced reasonably.

1. They don’t recreate the shoot first, aim later problems that Attributor did at the AP last year, and
2. They provide credit for social sharing instead of taxing it as PaidContent reported they might:

Charge people 5 cents to forward an article unless the recipient already has a subscription. (This option isn’t mentioned in the venture’s initial offerings.)
